Abbeyshrule village is hosting a Ceremony of Light at the ruins of its Cistercian abbey which dates back to the twelfth century. This is to mark the first time that the abbey has been illuminated with a sustainable lighting system.
Founded in Abbeyshrule in 1200 under the patronage of the O’Farrels of Annaly, the abbey was colonised by the Cistercian monks from Mellifont. All that remains today is the ruined rectangular Abbey church, traces of a cloister garth to the south, the foundations of the Presbytery, and evidence of a south transept.
This Cruinniú na Cásca event will take place at dusk and will include an evocative programme of performances by local artists including the Innyside Singers choral group and an ecumenical service. All will take place under the gaze of the ‘Abbeyshrule Monks’, representing the Cistercian monks who built the abbey, one of whom will welcome guests at the gates. All are welcome.
